Sod makes sense if you want the lawn to be green as fast as possible.  The roots go through a little bit of Shock before they re-grow to establish itself into the old underlying soil. 

Fresh seed and really well enriched topsoil can have the best long lasting effects.  When you are patent and not in a hurry.   it helps if the area has good sun light.

Sometimes when there are areas that do not get enough sunlight it is better to use sod to fully cover those hard to grow spots.
